I can't believe I'm heading into my 10th summer as the BHAC head coach. I’ve been teaching 7th grade Math and coaching the swim team at Derby Middle School for the over 20 years. I’ve also been coaching in the NSSL for over 20 years. I also coach club swimming in the winter for Atlantis Swimming. I swam competitively for 12 years with teams at Heart of the Hills Swim Club, OLY, and Rochester Adams HS before moving on to my freshman year at Oakland University where I was an All-American. Outside of the pool I am a huge Detroit sports fan and enjoy watching football and hockey in the winter and Tigers baseball in the summer. A fun fact that most people don’t know about me is that during my first year swimming at HHSC, when I was 7 yrs old, I was disqualified in every meet swimming the 25 Butterfly – UNTIL the last meet which was at BHAC! I’m really excited about our upcoming season and can’t wait to spend the summer with the great swimmers and families at BHAC!
Hi everyone. This is coach Steve. Here is some information about me - I recently completed my 23rd year of teaching for the Dearborn Public Schools. I’ve also completed over 20 years of coaching swimming in the vicinity of Birmingham, plus coached for many summer swim seasons in the area. If memory serves me correctly, this will be my seventh season coaching at BHAC. This is a great group of swimmers, coaches, and parents to work with. I look forward to meeting the new swimmers and parents. To the returning swimmers and parents, I have been working on my puns since last summer.
To wrap up my bio, I wanted to share some words of wisdom that came from an ancient Greek philosopher named Mediacrates. He said, “In the world of gallons, be a litre.”
I’m very excited to return for my 4th season with you this summer. Here’s a little bit about me and my family, I recently married my wife Paulette in February 2019 and we are now expecting a baby boy this fall. We live just down the road in Southfield and couldn’t be more excited to be back with BHAC. I am thrilled to be back this season with all of you and I look forward to sharing in the summer swim experience again. I'm in my 6th year teaching physical education at Pembroke Elementary. I swam from freshman year of high school through senior year at Eastern Michigan University. May still have a record or two from either place, but look forward to preparing our BHAC kiddos to surpass them. I learned swimming quite late, as you read above, so my technique was painfully learned the hard way through training, not so much through drills. So I understand, and appreciate the value and necessity of technique work in the pool. Which is why I enjoy working for the BHAC program, not to mention the wonderful families and coaches that make this club feel like home.
Once a shark, always a shark. I started coaching for BHAC in 2019, but my time as a shark started LONG before that! I was 4 years old (1995!) when I started swimming for BHAC for the pre-team. That was when they had “C’ Finals for the pre-teamers! We swam across the deep end with older swimmers cheering us on. I swam for the sharks for 13 summers (ages 5 to 18) and loved every minute of it. I made lifelong friends and still have a record! When it’s not summer and I’m not on the pool deck I am teaching 8th grade Language Arts at Van Hoosen Middle School in Rochester. I enjoy going to yoga, hanging out with friends and family, and cheering on the Detroit Tigers. As a kid I always looked forward to spending everyday at BHAC and as an adult I can say that it still makes me happy! I can’t wait to spend the summer with all the families at BHAC!
I am very excited to be back at BHAC this year! I grew up swimming in the NSSL and this is my sixth year coaching. I am a proud Michigan State Alum and I teach History at Canton High School. When I am not at BHAC, I also coach for Atlantis and the woman's Water Polo team at Groves High School. I am looking forward to a fun-filled season!
